Chairman of CIG Motors, Diana Chen, has received accolades for her business leadership and investment contributions across Africa, particularly for championing over $2bn in business ventures on the continent.
This was the highlight of Tuesday’s event titled ‘An Afternoon with Diana Chen,’ held in celebration of her birthday, an event that doubled as a tribute to her cross-border accomplishments and transformational impact in business, culture, and mentorship.
Chen, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the China-Africa Business Council, has been widely recognised for strengthening China-Africa relations and delivering impactful development initiatives.
Chief Financial Officer of CIG Motors, Dr. Ramanathan Murugesan, said, “Chief Diana Chen is not just a business leader; she’s an architect of cross-continental progress. As Vice Chairman of the China-Africa Business Council, she has championed over $2bn in investments into Africa, demonstrating that her leadership standard demands excellence and delivers profound impact.”
Some of the attendees also recognised Chen, a triple chieftaincy title holder, for her business acumen and her role in mentoring young Africans and bridging cultural divides.
The high-profile event attracted industry captains, including bank managing directors, chief executive officers, and diplomats. It featured two panel discussions, which offered insight into the leadership philosophy and personal journey of the CIG boss.
In a panel titled ‘Home Away from Home: The Journey of a Cultural Bridge,’ moderated by Toyosi Etim-Effiong, Chen discussed her affinity for Nigeria and how shared values have shaped her work and leadership style. She was joined by Executive Director of Access Bank Corporate & Investment Banking, Iyabo Soji-Okunsanya, and Director-General of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dr. Chinyere Almona.
The trio discussed Chen’s unique ability to connect with people, her commitment to fostering mutual understanding, and how embracing Nigeria has enriched her personal and professional journey.
The second session, ‘Legacy and Creative Impact: Beyond Business and Borders,’ hosted by Osarogie Ogbonmwan, delved into Chen’s views on legacy, creativity, and visionary leadership. It featured the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian Exchange Group, Temi Popoola, and the President of Oando Clean Energy, Ademola Ogunbanjo.
“Chief Chen’s humility, tireless work ethic, and passion for cultural integration are inspiring,” Popoola said. Ogunbanjo echoed the sentiment, adding, “Her leadership has consistently shown that building a legacy is not just about success but about creating an impact that lasts beyond borders.”
A highlight of the afternoon was the appearance of students from Yaba College of Technology, who are beneficiaries of the Silk Road International Fellowship Programme. According to CIG Motors, the students are studying automobile engineering in China through Chen’s sponsorship.
“Thanks to Chief Diana’s vision and support, we have gained world-class skills that will shape our futures and the future of Africa’s automotive industry,” one of the students said during the tribute segment.
Executive Director of CIG Motors, Jubril Arogundade, described Chen as a leader who leads with heart, stating, “Chief Diana has reminded us that power lies not just in titles or achievements, but in authenticity, resilience, and service to others. Her story is a call to lead with more heart, to dream bigger, and to lift others as we rise.”
