Award-winning Nigerian music star, Burna Boy, has publicly apologised for his earlier controversial comments about Afrobeats, a genre that has propelled him and many African artists to global stardom.

In an interview that went viral, Burna Boy had claimed that “90 percent of Afrobeats songs lack substance,” sparking widespread backlash from fans, fellow artists, and music critics. He was accused of undermining a genre that has not only defined African pop culture but also played a key role in his own rise to international fame.

However, speaking recently during an interview on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show, Burna Boy admitted he misspoke and acknowledged the impact of his comments.

“At the time I said those things, I was in a dark place creatively. I  felt boxed in. I wasn’t trying to bring anyone down, but I now realise how it came across. I totally get the backlash and I apologise for the confusion.”

The Grammy-winning artist clarified that his frustration stemmed from being constantly labeled as an Afrobeats artist, despite his unique sound  which he defines as Afrofusion — blending elements of dancehall, reggae, hip hop, and traditional African rhythms.

“It wasn’t the genre I had an issue with. It was how I was being boxed into it when I’ve always tried to push boundaries musically,” he added.

Burna Boy’s remarks in 2023 were seen by many as dismissive of the work of fellow Nigerian and African artists, many of whom have been instrumental in taking the Afrobeats genre to the global stage.

In response to the apology, reactions on social media have been mixed. While some fans appreciate his willingness to reflect and take responsibility, others remain skeptical, accusing the artist of backtracking due to pressure.

Despite the controversy, Burna Boy remains one of the most influential African artists today. His latest album, No Sign of Weakness, released in July 2025, features international collaborations and continues to top charts globally.

With this apology, the “African Giant” appears to be taking a step toward mending fences with the Afrobeats community and reasserting his role as a leading voice in African music ,  one that not only breaks boundaries but also respects the roots from which it rose.
