Africa Gears Up For Weekend Of Glamour, Culture, Storytelling

The countdown is over as Africa’s biggest celebration of film and television, the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), takes place today in Lagos.

Organized by Africa Magic in partnership with MultiChoice, the AMVCAs have evolved into the continent’s premier platform for honoring excellence in African film, television, and digital content. This year’s festivities began on Wednesday, May 7, with a four-day cultural and industry showcase that has continued to build momentum towards the grand awards night.

The celebration kicked off with Icons Night, a tribute to industry legends whose contributions have shaped Africa’s creative landscape. On Thursday, Young Filmmakers Day put the spotlight on the next generation of storytellers, featuring an exclusive AMVCA Masterclass on “Sound in Filmmaking,” led by acclaimed sound engineer and producer, Shawn Butler.

Friday saw the vibrant Cultural Night, a spectacular showcase of African fashion, food, music, and artistic expression, celebrating the continent’s rich heritage. The night featured a high-energy live performance by Segun Johnson, as well as appearances from notable personalities. The best-dressed male and female celebrities of the evening were awarded cash prizes.

Today, the excitement culminates in the main awards ceremony—an extravagant event filled with red carpet glamour, electrifying performances, and the crowning of winners across 27 award categories, including Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Director. The ceremony will be hosted by the charismatic IK Osakioduwa, with musical performances from Johnny Drille, Fido, Kumie, and a special dance act by The Dreamcatchers.

Dr. Busola Tejumola, executive head of Content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice, expressed her enthusiasm: “This year, we’re celebrating not just creative excellence, but the cultural richness and resilience of the African film and television industry. From the fashion to the music and the stories themselves, the AMVCAs are a powerful reflection of our identity and our evolution as storytellers.”
