NECA hails NHIA chairman appointment

The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association has applauded the Federal Government for appointing a substantive chairman for the National Health Insurance Authority, describing it as a step toward strengthening the institution’s governance structure.

Speaking in Lagos on Tuesday, NECA’s Director-General, Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, emphasised that the success of any public scheme depends on effective leadership.

“The appointment of a substantive chairman for the NHIA will not only strengthen the institution but also reposition it to achieve its objectives,” Oyerinde stated.

However, NECA urged the government to expedite the appointment of chairmen and boards for several other critical agencies, including the National Pension Commission and the National Directorate of Employment, in line with their enabling Acts.

“We urge the government to expeditiously appoint chairmen for other critical institutions like PENCOM, NDE, etc. The management of these agencies cannot substitute for governing bodies. The enabling Acts clearly define the independent and complementary roles of the boards and management,” Oyerinde noted.

Beyond merely inaugurating these boards, NECA stressed the need for strategic mechanisms to ensure they function as intended. The association warned against boards becoming mere rubber-stamp bodies, emphasising that they should provide oversight and strategic direction rather than simply endorsing management decisions.

According to Oyerinde, NECA’s call aligns with growing concerns about vacancies in key government institutions, which experts say could weaken regulatory efficiency and hinder effective policy implementation.

“With the NHIA leadership now in place, attention shifts to whether the government will heed NECA’s call and fast-track the appointment of boards for other vital agencies to enhance institutional effectiveness and policy execution,” the NECA DG added.
