An energy project has transformed the lives of over 5,000 residents in Robinyan, Ogun State, with the inauguration of a 50kW interconnected mini-grid.
According to a statement, the project was developed through a collaboration between Sahara Power Group, Ikeja Electric, Darway Coast, RMI, and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.
The project is set to provide a reliable, clean, and cost-effective power supply to the peri-urban community.
The Robinyan mini-grid integrates grid power with distributed solar photovoltaic and battery storage solutions, addressing years of unreliable electricity supply that forced residents and businesses to rely on costly and environmentally damaging diesel and petrol generators.
Sahara Power Group’s Managing Director, Anthony Youdeowei, said, “Making a difference through reliable, accessible, and clean energy solutions remains a critical quest for Sahara Power, and we are delighted this has come to fruition.
“We look forward to this project translating to enhanced economic prosperity for Robinyan residents.”
The project, initiated in 2022, saw Darway Coast take charge of designing and constructing the generation assets while Ikeja Electric provided technical expertise and facilitated community engagement.
It added that the newly commissioned system boasts a 500-kW solar PV array, 625 kWh of battery storage, a 500kVA backup generator, and extensive distribution network upgrades.
Also, the CEO of Darway Coast, Henry Ureh, highlighted the broader impact, stating, “At Darway Coast, we believe that access to sustainable and reliable energy is the foundation for community empowerment and economic growth. This project demonstrates our commitment to innovative, environmentally responsible energy solutions that directly benefit residents and businesses.”
Meanwhile, it mentioned that the project’s success was made possible through philanthropic grants from GEAPP, with RMI providing technical assistance throughout the design and implementation phases.
RMI’s Managing Director of Global South and Catalytic Capital programs, Ije Okeke, noted, “This project represents a significant milestone in our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable energy solutions in Nigeria.”
It further noted that it generates approximately 545,000 kWh annually, and the mini-grid will significantly reduce carbon emissions by displacing 420 metric tons from diesel generators. It will also improve public services, attract businesses, and enhance education and healthcare facilities in the area.
Meanwhile, the Manager of Utility Innovation at GEAPP, Fauzia Okediji, said, “This project showcases radical collaboration and an innovative business model that integrates clean energy with the grid, improving supply quality and reducing reliance on costly fossil fuels.”
“With over 1,400 connections already established, the Robinyan mini-grid sets a precedent for expanding sustainable energy access in Nigeria and across Africa,” it noted.
