Pension unions seek stronger collaboration on retiree welfare – Punch Newspapers

Some Pension Union executives have met with the Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, Tolulope Odunaiya, has called for stronger collaboration to boost the welfare of retirees.

In a statement from PTAD, it was revealed that the representatives of pension unions include those from the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria, the National Association of Retired Paramilitary Officers, and the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (All Sectoral Units/Parastatals), who came to pay a courtesy call on the ES at the PTAD Headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking on behalf of ARPON, the national president, AIG Paul Ochonu (Rtd.), commended PTAD for the innovative ‘I am Alive’ confirmation solution; he confirmed that his members have become more familiar with the platform, and hence, they can easily confirm their aliveness in the comfort of their homes.

Further discussions with NARPO and NUP executives focused on strengthening collaboration between PTAD and the Pension Unions and addressing issues affecting retirees, such as harmonisation of pensions, issues with the back-end computation of pensions, the payment of the N32,000 pension increment, and other outstanding arrears.

The ES PTAD, in her response to their enquiries over the delay in the implementation of the N32,000 pension increment of 2024, reiterated that payment would be made as soon as the funds in the 2025 budgetary provisions are released.

Odunaiya further thanked the pension unions for their commitment and promised them that the directorate will continue in its efforts to collaborate closely with all relevant stakeholders in resolving the issues raised at the meetings and ensure that the well-being of DBS pensioners is prioritised.

Earlier in the month, PTAD told pensioners that it was committed to implementing the recently approved N32,000 pension increment for retirees under the Defined Benefit Scheme.

PTAD issued the clarification following the payment of the January 2025 pension, which did not reflect the increment. Odunaiya blamed the development on the delay in the release of funds.

PTAD was established in August 2013 to manage the old pension scheme for pensioners who retired on or before June 2007 and did not transition to the new scheme.
