The founder and president of the Sports for Special Needs Club at Kinkaid, Fife Famurewa, looks to connect Nigeria’s medical community with global advancements in assistive technology.

Famurewa, who is also a member of the Easter Seals Houston Chapter, a nonprofit organisation that provides comprehensive disability services to military families and individuals in need, said she has a deep interest in how engineering devices can be used in medicine to help people with disabilities.

She stated this in a statement on Sunday obtained by The PUNCH.

Famurewa added that her foundation was created because of her active involvement in other foundations.

She said she is excited to share an initiative that combines her passion and experiences.

“Through this research and interview, I hope to connect Nigeria’s medical community with global advancements in assistive technology. In fact, with the support of the Texas Technology Access Program, I dropped off various 3D-printed tactile symbols and communication boards at school for children with autism in Nigeria to help with the children’s ability to communicate,” Famurewa said.

The high school student from Houston, Texas, explained that as an active member of the group, she had the opportunity to visit one of the centres dedicated to assistive technology.

According to her, the experience, along with some personal research, sparked a desire to bring knowledge about these life-changing technologies to the medical professionals in Nigeria.

She said she had worked with various schools in Lagos, adding that the experiences helped her answer her research question.

“But there were two private schools, one in Ketu and the other in Opebi, both in Lagos,” she said.
