Skills gap stalling facility management growth, says firm – Punch Newspapers

The Chief Executive Officer of Max-Migold Ltd, Paul Erubami, says skill gaps, inadequate funding, and inconsistent regulatory enforcement are stalling the growth of facility management in the country.

In a statement, Erubami noted that the Facility Management Master Craft Diploma has set out plans to provide specialised training for aspiring facility managers in a bid to enhance capacity building and professional development in the facility management sector.

He said, “The initiative by Max-Migold Ltd aims to bridge the skills gap in the Nigerian facility management industry and empower professionals to meet the demands of a dynamic and fast-evolving field.

“Facilities management practitioners in Nigeria face numerous challenges, including skills shortages, inadequate funding, and inconsistent regulatory enforcement. FMMC is actively addressing these issues. For example, the initiative offers professional development programmes aimed at enhancing the skills of facilities managers. These programmes cover a range of topics, from technical skills to management and leadership training.

“Additionally, the initiative advocates better funding and resources for the industry, engaging with government agencies and private sector stakeholders to secure necessary investments. They also work closely with regulatory bodies to standardise practices and ensure compliance with industry standards. The collaboration with educational institutions to develop relevant curricula further supports the professional growth of facilities management practitioners.

In a similar vein, a chief lecturer in the Department of Building Technology, Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Olufemi Akinsola, said building collapse was a result of a lack of facility management and the adequate skill required.

He asserted that the most critical skills gaps within the facilities management workforce in Nigeria included technical expertise in modern building systems, sustainability practices, and regulatory compliance.

He advised, “To address these gaps, educational institutions need to update their curricula to include these critical areas. Incorporating courses on emerging technologies, sustainability, and compliance will ensure that graduates are well-equipped to meet industry demands.

“Offering hands-on training through internships, apprenticeships, and partnerships with industry professionals can provide practical experience and bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Collaborations between industry and academia are essential to align educational programmes with the evolving needs of the facilities management sector.

“The FMMC Diploma training will run for three months, from February 3 to April 25, 2025, at the University of Lagos. Participants can choose between physical and virtual attendance, making the programme accessible to a broader audience.”
