CITN tasks fellows on tax reforms drive

The 16th President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Agbeluyi, has urged the newly conferred Fellows to take on a leadership role in driving meaningful tax reforms in Nigeria, emphasising the importance of their expertise in shaping a fair and efficient taxation system that will contribute significantly to the nation’s economic growth and stability.

Agbeluyi gave the charge at the Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held recently in Lagos. The event celebrated the elevation of professionals in the taxation sector to the distinguished rank of Fellow.

Agbeluyi commended the new Fellows for their remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment to the tax profession.

He noted that attaining the Fellow status is no easy feat, emphasising that this recognition is reserved for those who have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the advancement of tax administration in Nigeria.

“Today’s Fellowship Conferment Ceremony is a testament to your success and the growth of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria,” Agbeluyi stated.

Agbeluyi urged the newly inducted Fellows to recognise the broader responsibility they now bear, explaining that their role extends beyond personal excellence to that of leaders, mentors, and advocates for a robust and equitable tax system.

“As Fellows, you are now senior ambassadors of CITN’s mission, upholding the principles of accountability, transparency, and professionalism in the taxation system in Nigeria,” he added.

He also addressed the ongoing tax reforms in Nigeria, calling on the Fellows to actively engage with proposed legislation and policy changes. He highlighted the CITN’s role in shaping the tax landscape, particularly through contributions to the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. However, he also expressed concerns over certain provisions in the Economic Stabilisation Bills, urging members to continue offering their expert recommendations for improvement.

Reaffirming the Institute’s commitment to enhancing the value of its certification, Agbeluyi also highlighted new initiatives, including customised self-adhesive stamps for tax practitioners, which are aimed at improving the professional recognition and integrity of tax practitioners.

He concluded by wishing the new Fellows success in their endeavours, stating, “May you continue to inspire and drive the future of taxation in Nigeria.”
